A witch holds Rapunzel captive in a high tower in the woods. From the only window, she lets down her long braided hair so the old witch can climb up to see her. One day a prince hears singing and discovers Rapunzel in the tower. He promises to rescue her. There is a lot more to the story, so I encourage you to read it. It answers why she was there and the trials that the girl and prince endure to finally be together.
