After a miller makes an outrageous claim that his daughter can spin straw into gold to impress the King, the King not surprisingly then demands that the miller’s daughter do the same for him or die.  When Esmarelda, the daughter, is locked in a room full of straw and a spinning wheel, a small man appears and declares he can help her if she promises to give him her first born. After later marrying the Prince and bearing a child, the promise is forgotten — until the little man returns to claim the child. Only if Esmarelda can guess his unusual name in just three days will he release her from the bargain and not take her firstborn. And his name, he is sure, is one ”no one doth know”.
