Cinderella is treated cruelly by her stepmother and two ugly stepsisters.  The prince announces he is giving a ball in hopes of finding a princess and Cinderella dreams of dancing at the ball and meeting the him.  Will the fairy godmother grant her wish?

In The Nixie of the Pond, a beautiful but malevolent water sprite (a “nixie”) uses a miller’s greediness to deceive him into promising her the miller’s son.  She seizes and holds the grown son prisoner, but later loses him again through a trick that exploits the nixie’s weakness – her very own greed.

I did this piece with my personal experience in mind after moving from Iowa to LA for five years and then moving back to Iowa, I experienced the very same prejudice. Lot’s of assumptions out there on both sides about the country folk and the city folk that are just plain wrong!

The lesson here, is appreciate what you have, when you have it, and enjoy what you couldn’t have somewhere else.

Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear, you know the story. I have to admit this reveals some of my own experiences growing up. Papa Bear had the only recliner in the house and if he wasn’t in it, it meant he was working. He directed “traffic” from his throne, “Turn on the news.” “Get out of the way, I can’t see the TV!” and “Do what your mother said!” 

Mama Bear is an amalgam of most mothers…concerned about everyone and everything (and trying to look a little put together in public).

Baby Bear is asserting his independence. This is taken right out of my husband’s childhood, remembering himself at a very young age, marching through the house with his fist in the air as if to say, “Baby Power!”
